Hostas come in a wide range of sizes and as you go through our listing you will see a letter in parenthesis after the name which denotes the height of the plant…the ledger below will help to convert this to inches.
Valley’s Chute-the-Chute
[S] (Linneman) Low grower with pointed leaves that are somewhat
wavy and lay fairly flat to the ground. Wonderful bronze colored leaves in spring if the plant gets
direct sunlight that change to a “Granny Smith” green. Lavender flowers.
**Valley’s Glacier
[M] (Linneman) Beautiful sport of H. ‘First Frost’...frosted blue leaves
are heart-shaped and have a wide yellow border that changes to creamy-white as the season
progresses. Great substance on a plant that looks good all season and will be topped with
lavender flowers.
Valley’s Vanilla Sticks
[S] (Linneman) Sibling to H. ‘Valley’s Chute-the-Chute’, both are H. ‘Kifukurin Ubatake’ seedlings.
H. ‘Valley’s Vanilla Sticks’ is a small hosta with light blue leaves and makes an elegant, tight clump. Both the petioles and the
flower scapes have an abundance of purple spots. Topped with lavender flowers.
Velvet Moon
[L] (Hans Hansen/Naylor Creek Nursery) Sport of H. ‘Abiqua Moonbeam’…plant has large dark green leaves with
a very wide golden-yellow border. Similar growing habit and same great vigor as its parent. Lavender flowers.
Victory PPAF
[VL] (Zilis) Huge variegated sport from H. ‘Elatior’...very large dark green leaves
have a wide creamy-yellow border and are held upright. Topped with lavender flowers.
Viking Ship
[VL] (Wiegand) Huge oval to nearly round blue-green leaves stand upright on this
giant hosta. Leaves have glaucous bloom top and bottom, are lightly corrugated and deeply veined.
Margins have light ruffling and show some cupping. An open pollinated seedling from H.
‘Komodo Dragon’ and seems to like a little late afternoon sun.
Vulcan
[M/L] (Hansen) Sport from 'Captain Kirk' has creamy-white leaves with dark green
margins. Golden-yellow streaks occur along the interior margins where the white and green overlap.
Vigorous growth rate for a white-centered hosta. Pale lavender flowers mid summer.
War Paint
[M/L] (Naylor Creek Nursery) Large pointed and pie-crusted leaves emerge in spring
with a clear, bright butter-yellow center framed by a dark green border. Yellow center holds for a
few weeks and then begins to darken…the process is not even and some portions turn chartreuse and
others pale green. By mid June the center fades to pale green and the show is over for the season.
Topped with pale violet flowers late in the spring. Good substance and very vigorous.
the ‘Waukon’ series are introductions from Bob Axmear of
Hosta Library fame who lives in Waukon, Iowa… **Waukon Glass
[L] (Axmear) This new introduction from Bob Axmear has lots of
things going for it! Large frosty blue leaves have a very wide cream colored border that
makes a stunning contrast. The leaves have a sheen that almost gives a “glassy” look.
Good substance on a large clump topped with pale lavender flowers midsummer.
Waukon Thin Ice
[M] (Axmear) From Bob Axmear of Hosta Library fame...variegated
H. ‘Topaz’ sport is a beauty with thick blue leaves and a greenish-yellow border that becomes
yellow later in the season. Upright clump is a vigorous grower and has lavender flowers.
Waukon Water
[M] (Axmear) Nice open pollinated blue seedling with thick heart-shaped leaves...good
dark color and smooth texture. Topped with lavender flowers on branching scapes that are
fertile.
Woodland Elf
[mini] (Dean) This true miniature displays medium green leaves with a
neat cream to white edge. Each leaf is the width and slightly longer than a quarter. Substance
is good in this rapid growing clumper which quickly forms a tight, neat mound a couple
of inches tall. Lavender flowers bloom in early season on scapes in good proportion to
the mound. Plant this charmer where its playful nature can be appreciated.
you will find this unique plant a must… **Woop Woop
[M] (Naylor Creek Nursery/Fransen) We found this unique sport of H.
‘Pathfinder’ many years ago...thick green leaves have a creamy-white center that runs right
down the petiole. The leaves twist with the white going to the very tip. Lavender flowers in
midsummer. Named after an Australian wine enjoyed at a friends house one infamous
evening when the Fransens were visiting from Holland.
Yellow Polka Dot Bikini
[S] (Jones) Sport from H. ‘Striptease’ with bright yellow borders that
eventually turn apple green...leaf center is dark and shows the typical ‘Striptease’ white line. ‘Yellow
Polka Dot Bikini’ is quite distinctive early on but as it changes it begins to look very similar to H.
‘Hanky Panky’. The beautiful spring show is well worth having the plant. Leaves twist and cup a
little and then flatten out later. Topped with lavender flowers midsummer.
