Hostas come in a wide range of sizes and as you go through our listing you will see a letter in parenthesis after the name which denotes the height of the plant…the ledger below will help to convert this to inches.
Hacksaw
[S] (Livingston) Small, rapidly growing plant with long narrow and tapered leaves that are intensely rippled and serrated. Truly groundbreaking from a genetic perspective, it's appeal as a “collector's hosta” in no way disputes its garden worthiness. Blooms very late in the season with lavender flowers and is fertile both ways.
Half and Half
[M] (Naylor Creek Nursery) Sport from H. 'Lakeside Cupcake'...emerges with a pure white center that remains throughout the season. Thick leaves have a very dark green border and show a third light green color where there is overlap. Lavender flowers.
Hands Up PPAF
[S] (Fransen) This is a true tetraploid of H. 'Praying Hands' with lots of great attributes that make it a superior plant...very thick leaves (almost feel like rubber) that stay much smaller than the parent and a creamy-yellow to white border that is much more defined. The dense clump will be topped with lavender flowers.
Happy Dayz
[M] (Naylor Creek Nursery) This is a sport from H. 'Orange Marmalade' we found several years ago and thought it to be a tetraploid but testing has proven that is not the case. The leaves are thicker and the bluish-green border is wider than the parent. The leaf center is a bright yellow but fades to a parchment color and shows some variability from plant to plant. I would put this in the “unique and interesting to look at category” as it will be different.
Harry van de Laar
[M] (Cees Visser) Grayish-green leaves with white backs held on red petioles. Good substance and topped with lavender flowers.
Heat Wave
[M] (Jan van den Top) Fantastic sport from H. 'Bright Lights'..thick leather-like leaves have a chartreuse-yellow center and a very wide blue-green border. Topped with lavender flowers midsummer.
Her Eyes Were Blue
[S/M] (Dean) This wonderful plant was named for Mary Schwartzbauer's (past AHS president) mother...intensely silver-blue, almost steel gray, leaves are heavily rippled and lightly serrated. The leaf tip twists and curves downward creating a low mound that only reaches about 12” tall. Pale lavender flowers in midsummer. Good substance and moderate corrugation on a smaller blue that will fit into any size garden.
High Society
[S] (Hansen/Shady Oaks) Striking sport from H. 'June'…leaves emerge in spring with a warm yellow center that brightens to white and a variable wide blue margin. Superior substance and clump is topped with pale lavender flowers.
High Tide
[S/M] (Hansen) Nice compact clump of frosted heart-shaped blue-green leaves. Lavender flowers appear in late summer. Good for the front of a shady border.
**Hippodrome
[M] (Malloy) H. 'Halcyon' x H. 'Christmas Tree' hybrid that shows the best of both parents...thick, round blue-green leaves have a yellow border that turns creamy-white. Topped with pale lavender flowers.
**Hot Air Balloon
[VL] (Goodenough) This new introduction from Rick Goodenough is a large to very large gold with huge uniquely shaped leaves that seem to float in the breeze. Vigorous grower with very wide and deep set veins with “stitched” effect. Can take a lot of sun.
Hudson Bay PPAF
[M] (Walters Gardens) Very nice sport from H. 'Eskimo Pie' with a much wider blue-green border than it's parent. The creamy-yellow center is exquisite and somewhat irregular which adds interest. Fairly vigorous grower that makes a nice open clump that will be topped with near-white flowers midsummer.
Hyuga Urajiro
[S] (Japan) This kikutii has long, narrow frosty blue leaves with yellow streaks and the undersides are a metallic silver color.
**Ice Cube
[mini] (Fransen) A great new addition to the list of hosta minis! 'Ice Cube' is a sport from H. 'Cracker Crumbs'...shiny green leaves with a white border make a tight clump just like the parent. Dark lavender flowers and sure to become a classic.
Inspire Greatness
[M] (Silvers) This newer intro is the stable form of H. 'Brave Attempt'...rounded blue-green leaves have a nice creamy-white border and will be topped with pale lavender flowers. Vigorous grower with good substance.
Invincible Spirit
[M] (Zonneveld/Phillips) This newly available introduction is a seedling from H. 'Invincible' with cherry red petioles topped with beautiful shiny leaves that are held upright allowing the stems to be seen. As with most 'Invincible' sports this one can take a lot of sun and will turn more yellow. Topped w/lavender flowers that are fragrant.
Irish Luck
[L] (LaLonde) We are more than excited about this stunning plant from Irene LaLonde of Washington State...open pollinated seedling from H. 'Invincible' makes a medium-sized vase-shaped clump of very SHINY (on top and underneath) and very dark green leaves with deeply impressed veins and rippled edges. Leaf substance is outstanding and fragrant lavender flowers come in late summer.
Ivory Coast
[M] (Savory) A smaller sport of H. 'Sagae'...grey-green leaves have a wide rippled yellow border in spring that later turns to ivory. Great substance and lavender flowers.
Jaws
[S] (Scheer) Deep green intensely serrated and undulating leaves thick are very thick. A fast growing, dense clump that calls out to be man-handled. Don't worry, it can take it! Grows fine and looks good in full sun but to show-case the darkest green it appreciates a bit of shade.
Johnny Angel
[L] (Asch) This great gold plant will bring any garden to life…large mounded clump of heavily corrugated golden yellow leaves have somewhat wavy margins and cup downward. Near-white flowers appear in midsummer.
Journey’s End PP16895
[L] (Hans Hansen) Another great introduction from Hans Hansen ...sport of H. 'Choo Choo Train' with heart-shaped yellow-gold leaves framed by a wide dark green border and a ruffled edge. Topped with pale lavender flowers.
June
[M] (NEO Plants) One of the best hostas…leaves have bright gold to yellow centers with wide blue margins. Great substance. Holds up until the very end in the fall and is usually the last to do down. Lavender flowers in late July.
June Fever PP15340
[M] (Jan van den Top) This flashy plant comes up in the spring with a bright yellow leaf center surrounded by a thin blue-green border. The leaves are shiny and the color holds until about the end of June and then begins to darken slowly until it becomes chartreuse. Good substance and topped lavender flowers.
**Jurassic Park
[VL] (Lysne) This one fits into the “giant” category and can form a clump of huge green leaves reaching 8' across and 3'+ tall. The magnificent leaves are heavily puckered and corrugated making them almost indestructible. More than vigorous and topped with pale lavender flowers this hosta can also take lots of sun…(these are nicely rooted 2nd yr tc plants).
Justine PPAF
[M] (Van den Top) Jan brings us the tetraploid of H. 'June Fever'...all the same wonderful traits as the parent but its even better! Nice thick, shiny yellow leaves have a wide green border and make a medium-sized clump. Locate in a sunny spot and the leaves will stay yellow or plant in the shade and they will change to a green center. Lavender flowers.
